The Early Gardener's Checklist: Prepping for Spring in Greenville, SC

While the Upstate is still shaking off the winter storm and inches of snow, Upstate South Carolina gardeners know that February and March are the most critical months for a successful harvest. Starting your spring garden early isn't just about getting ahead of the neighbors—it's about working with our unique South Carolina Zone 8a climate.

At Staggs Garden Center, we don't just sell plants; we offer professional garden consultations and can assist with your planting plans to help you navigate our ~amazing~ SC red clay. Use this checklist to prep your yard for the best growing season yet.

  1. Test Your Soil

Greenville SC soil can be notoriously acidic and compacted, making it very difficult for plants to grow and thrive. Before you spend money on new plants, you need to know your pH levels.

    - How We Can Help: Once you get your numbers back from a soil testing kit (if you don't have a soil testing kit, we recommend that you contact Clemson Cooperative Extension so they can assist with your soil testing), we can help you pick our the right organic lime to raise your pH or sulfur amendments to lower it. We'll make sure you walk out with exactly what your specific patch of dirt needs.

  2. Amend and Prep Your Garden Beds

To turn that clay into "black gold," you'll need high-quality organic matter so your soil can drain properly and hold more nutrients for your plants.

    - Items You Need: Grab bags of our premium Daddy Pete's Mushroom Compost, cow manure, and Daddy Pete's Soil Enhancer to improve drainage. If you have a large project, ask us about our bulk mulch and soil delivery services across the Upstate.

    - Action Step: Pull winter weeds like crazy now. Applying a pre-emergent weed control today saves you hours of labor in May.

    - How We Can Help: Our team can help you get the best materials and figure out how much of a certain product(s) you may need for your garden.

  1. Start Seeds Indoors

Since our last frost date in Greenville is usually mid-April, now is the time to start your "heat-lovers" inside.

    - Items You Need: We have everything for a DIY nursery: seed starting trays, seeds, moisture meters, peat-free seed starting mix, and more.

    - Pro Tip: Use a soil thermometer to ensure your seeds stay at a steady 70-75° F for optimal germination.

  1. Plant "Early Bird" Cool-Season Crops

You don't have to wait for April to get growing! Many vegetables thrive in the crisp Upstate spring.

    - Items You Need: We are currently stocked with nearly every fruit/vegetable seed you can think of. Give us a call to see if we have what you're looking for.

  1. Tool Tune-Up and Landscape Maintenance

Dull tools damage plants and invite disease.

    - Items You Need: Check out our selection of heavy duty tools here.

    - Maintenance: Now is the time to prune summer-loving shrubs (hydrangeas, viburnum, caryopteris, etc.) If you're unsure where to cut, visit us today so we can show you how to do it.
